The parables are a special kind of Biblical record. Parables are stories that access bigger truth, but they are not in themselves true stories. Jesus used parables in the same way a loving parent might use a story to help a child understand a concept that spans beyond their comprehension. This series is a focus on these teachings not only from an historical, and hermeneutical perspective, but a serious reflection upon the depth dimension that Jesus opens through them.
Nearly every parable begins by telling us that “the Kingdom of Heaven is like…” Thus a parable is how we gain the eyes to see Heaven, which Jesus tells us is here now. The parables help us to live from heaven, not live to try and get to heaven, once we see this, then we see the depth dimension in these amazing stories.
Even if you’ve heard these stories many times, or preached them twice as many times, I’m willing to bet that the Spirit will reveal something to you that your seminary training missed. This is not skim the surface sermon material, it’s fodder for true contemplation and the discovery of the Love of God.
